Ruby - Stone of the week

So here we are in July. I can hardly believe how quickly it has arrived. The change of month comes the change of birthstone. July’s traditional birthstone is ruby. I have always loved the rich red of the most beautiful rubies. I guess I have expensive taste as to have a ruby of the colour that I love costs a lot of money. However, the rubies that are popular in today’s fine jewellery have a beautiful pink colour that makes them such a pretty stone. The picture to the left is of the Carmen Lucia Ruby which now belongs to the Smithsonian’s National Museum of Natural History. It has a carat weight of 23.1 and was mined in Burma in the 1930’s.

Ruby attributes:

· When given as a gift it is a symbol of friendship and love

· Symbol of vitality and royalty

· It is said to aid the circulation and cleansing the blood.

· It is said to bring love, success, integrity, passion and promise

· It may enhance emotions in a positive way.

· It is said to reduce nightmares

· Zodiac stone for Capricorn

There is a very famous ruby that was part of a jewellery theft from the American Museum of Natural History. It is called the Delong Star ruby as the ruby was bought by Mrs. Edith Hagging De Long in 1937. She then donated the ruby to the Museum in the same year. It is a cabochon (this means that it has been polished but not faceted) ruby that weighs 100.32 carats! The ruby was stolen along with the Star of India, Eagle Diamond the Midnight Sapphire and another 18 jewels in 1964. However the four mentioned here including the Delong Star Ruby were so famous they couldn’t be sold. The others are said to have been recovered from a locker but the ruby was ransomed and was collected from a drop off point, a phone booth in Florida! In true Hollywood style a film was released of the story of the heist in 1975. The story was made popular because one of the gang responsible was a famous sports figure.

I personally prefer my stones smaller and at a price that I can afford so that I can enjoy them and own lots of different jewellery. How about you?

Best wishes
