Smoky Quartz is the translucent brown/black stone that is gaining popularity in jewellery making. I am not surprised as it has a beautiful hue that can vary so much in colour within just one stone.
One variation of the stone is called Morion which is said to come from a misreading of mormorion in Pliny the Elder who lived AD 23 – 79. The stone was made into flat panes by the Chinese in the 12th Century. Can you guess what the panes were used for? The answer is at the end of my blog 😊
The other form of the stone is called Cairngorm after the mountains where it was found. For this reason many class Smoky Quartz as the National stone for Scotland. The stone is found in kilt pins, shoulder brooches and as a power stone in the handles of weapons. Sadly I can’t find any pictures of historic pieces. So I have added a photo of some beautiful tumble stones that I use for wire wrapping workshops.
Smoky Quartz Attributes:
· Said to relieve stress, anxiety and tension
· Ward of negative thinking and eliminate worry and doubt
· Can be used as a tool for meditation as it helps to explore your inner self
· Enhance dreams and channelling abilities
· It is said to increase fertility and remove toxins from kidneys, pancreas and adrenals
I wonder if any of you have guessed what the Chinese used the flat panes of smoky quartz for? They were used for sunglasses! It seems obvious when you know. Who would have thought that “sunnies” were invented by the Chinese about 900 hundred years ago!
Please note that the stone attribute section is not proven to be a direct outcome of wearing or owning the stone. It is also not a prescription and should not be used alone to treat health problems.
