Aquamarine - Stone of the week

Well I’m sure you won’t be surprised to hear that the name Aquamarine comes from the Latin for sea water. This beautiful beryl (other beryl stones are morganite and emerald) stone has such a gorgeous green/blue colour that it is very similar to the colour of the sea in beautiful places. The Romans also believed that the stone would protect you from dangers when travelling on the sea. They also thought it resolved laziness and provided energy.

The colour also reminds me of the sky in the months of February and March. The sky is often the paler blue colour at springtime. Maybe that was why it was chosen as a birthstone for March. In addition to that it is a zodiac stone for Pisces, Aquarius and Taurus and so it has a very popular spot for jewellery in the retail market. Due to the stone being associated with beauty, honesty, loyalty and happiness it is often found in eternity rings. As it is usually more blue than green then it can be used as throat Chakra stone and so therefore is said to assist with communication.

  • Balances excess anger and fear

  • Associated with beauty, honesty, loyalty and happiness

One of the most famous sets of aquamarine jewellery belongs to Queen Elizabeth II. This is set that she is seen wearing quite often to events. She was gifted a necklace and matching earring set by the Brazillian president on the occasion of her coronation in 1953. She has since added a bracelet, brooch and tiara which she commissioned Garrard the royal jeweller to make. I’m not surprised as the original pieces were so beautiful who could resist to add to the ensemble or a parure as a set of matching jewellery is called. Having seen the picture of them does it make you want to go out and buy some aquamarine? I have a few pieces of aquamarine but I don’t have a bracelet………

Best wishes
